Gamry Instruments Newsletter
August 2006

The summer has been
HOT, so while you
have been on vacation, we have been busy
inside where it's cool, working to bring you a new
Application Note, some Tips on Tips (Vycor®,
that is), a new version of the Gamry software (see
Quick Links!), and a
NEW family of Potentiostats!

In this issue...
Gamry Goes Green - Series G Potentiostats !

Gamry's line of PCI card Potentiostats is now environmentally friendly!

We have re-engineered our Potentiostats to comply with the Reduction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) regulations of the European Union. We took the opportunity to upgrade the design to take advantage of the most modern technology, to improve reliability and performance, and to keep the value-driven price.

The Care of Vycor® Frits

Vycor® is often used at the end of a reference electrode or a bridge tube to allow electrical, ionic conductivity between the bulk of the solution and the internal filling solution, while preventing large scale convective mixing of the solutions. Vycor, or "thirsty glass," is a porous glass with a fairly low leak rate.

The Vycor frits, however, are not immortal!

Gamry's Electrochemistry ToolkitTM
Hammer

Hammer out integrating electrochemistry into your already complicated, but Nobel Prize-winning, quantum physics experiment!

Seriously, if you need to tightly integrate a Potentiostat into your experiment, but were afraid of the programming task, look at our new Electrochemistry ToolkitTM. It brings a value-priced Gamry Potentiostat into your programming environment.

FAS1/FAS2 is Retiring!
FAS1 and ISA Bus Controller

We are retiring the FAS2 Femtostat! After a 10-year lifetime, this ground-breaking instrument is going to the Great Stockroom in the Sky.

Fear Not! If you need to measure vanishingly small currents, or astronomically high impedance coatings, Gamry still has a product to fill your needs -- the Reference 600! It has nearly the same current sensitivity (20 aA minimum resolution) as the FAS2 and the same high Electrometer Impedance (1 Tohm) as the FAS2.

However, the Reference 600 adds higher current capability, advanced data acqusition modes, 2- 3- or 4-terminal measurements, 1 MHz EIS measurements, and USB interconnectivity.

With today's hardware and software, making the EIS measurement is easy. Knowing whether you can trust the values is sometimes not as easy.

The Accuracy Contour Plot is a way of summarizing the accuracy of the EIS measurement over a wide range of frequencies and impedances. Our new App Note shows how to interpret the Accuracy Plot, some of the instrumental characteristics that limit the accuracy, and how to minimize these limitations.

Researchers working on paints and coatings, fuel cells and batteries, or microelectrodes may encounter one or more of these limitations and will benefit from this note.
